LED Strip Lighting: The Complete Buying Guide for Electricians and DIYers
LED strip lighting has become standard on commercial fit-outs, kitchen under-cabinet installs, bathroom mirror surrounds, and retail display work. The range of products has expanded significantly — 12V vs 24V, IP20 vs IP33 vs IP67, single-colour vs RGB vs tunable white, low-voltage tape vs mains-voltage linkable battens. This guide cuts through the options and maps the right product to each application, using the Integral LED and Knightsbridge ranges available at APM.
Two Distinct Systems: Low-Voltage Tape vs Mains Linkable Battens
Before specifying, identify which system applies to the job:
- Low-voltage LED tape (12V or 24V DC) — flexible adhesive-backed tape, requires a separate LED driver/transformer. Used for under-cabinet lighting, cove lighting, feature lighting, display cases. Can be cut to length. Requires an electrical connection at the driver only.
- Mains-voltage linkable strip lights (230V) — rigid batten-style fittings that daisy-chain together on a 230V supply. Used for workshop and garage lighting, commercial store rooms, under-counter illumination in retail, utility rooms. Connect one to the mains, link the rest with supplied connectors.
These are not interchangeable. Specify the system based on the installation type before selecting any product.
Low-Voltage LED Tape: Integral LED Range
12V vs 24V: Which to Choose
12V tape is adequate for short runs (under 5m) and lower-output applications. For runs over 5m, or where you need consistent brightness from end to end without a mid-run power injection, 24V is the correct choice. The voltage drop on a 5m 12V run at full load causes visible dimming at the far end. 24V halves the current for the same wattage, dramatically reducing voltage drop.
Rule: specify 24V for any run over 3–4 metres, or for commercial applications where consistency matters.
The Integral LED Tape Range
- Integral LED Strip 5M 12V 3000K Warm White, 220lm — £18.99 — budget entry point. 220lm/m is adequate for accent and mood lighting. Not suitable as task lighting. 3000K warm white for residential spaces.
- Integral LED Strip 5M 24V 4000K Cool White, 960lm — £29.99 — 960lm/m is a significant step up — suitable for task lighting under kitchen cabinets, vanity mirror surrounds, and retail display. 4000K neutral white is the correct choice for kitchens and workspaces.
- Integral LED Strip 24V 12W/m 10M Warm White — £69.99 — 10m reel for longer runs. 12W/m is high output — use this where the strip is the primary light source in a cove or recess, not just accent.
- Integral LED IP33 5M Strip 24V 4000K 11.28W Cool White — £26.99 — IP33 rated: splashproof, suitable for areas where condensation or occasional splashing occurs. Use in bathrooms (outside IP zones 0/1), utility rooms, and humid environments.
- Integral LED Strip 24V 12W/m IP33 5M RGB+W — £34.99 — RGBW (red, green, blue + dedicated white channel). Full colour changing with a true white setting. For feature lighting, hospitality, retail, and any application where colour control is required.
- Integral LED Plug and Play Colour Changing Strip 5M — £40.00 — includes driver and controller. The domestic self-install option — no separate transformer required, plugs into a standard socket.
IP Ratings Explained
| Rating | Protection | Where to use |
|---|---|---|
| IP20 | No moisture protection | Dry indoor locations only — ceiling coves, furniture |
| IP33 | Splashproof (any direction) | Kitchens, bathrooms outside IP zones, utility rooms |
| IP65 | Jet-proof / dust-tight | Shower zones, under-counter in commercial kitchens |
| IP67 | Temporary immersion | Outdoor ground-level features, pool surrounds |
Aluminium Profiles: Why They Matter
Running LED tape without a profile is the most common amateur mistake. Aluminium profiles are not cosmetic — they serve two functions:
- Heat dissipation: LED tape generates heat at the PCB. Without a heatsink, the junction temperature rises, reducing lifespan significantly. An aluminium profile conducts heat away from the LEDs, keeping the strip running at rated output for its rated life (typically 50,000 hours).
- Light diffusion: the frosted diffuser cover on a profile eliminates hot spots (visible individual LED points) and produces an even line of light. Without a profile, you see dots.
- Integral LED 2M Aluminium Strip Profile — £22.99 — standard surface-mount profile with frosted cover. Suits most under-cabinet and cove applications. Fits standard 10mm and 12mm tape widths.
- Integral LED 2M Recessed Aluminium Strip Profile — £19.99 — for installation in a routed channel in timber or plasterboard. Creates a flush finish with the surface — the strip appears to float.
- Integral LED Profile Aluminium Surface Mount 2M — £29.99 — wider profile for higher-output tape, commercial applications.
- Integral LED Profile Aluminium Round 2M — £23.99 — circular cross-section for a minimal aesthetic. Common in hospitality and retail fit-outs.
Connectors and Controllers
- Strip Light Connector + Wire 10mm IP20/IP33 — £4.99 — for connecting two lengths of tape end-to-end or running tape from a driver. Solderless push-in connection.
- 2-Way Connector 150mm Wire IP33/IP20 RGB — £5.49 — for branching an RGB strip at a corner or junction without cutting the strip.
- RF Remote Touch Screen Dimmer for RGB/RGBW — £14.99 — radio frequency remote control for colour-changing tape. Pairs with RGB and RGBW strips.
- Bluetooth LED Music Controller for RGB — £14.99 — Bluetooth app-controlled, 40-key, music-reactive. Android/iOS.
Mains-Voltage Linkable Battens: Knightsbridge Range
Knightsbridge linkable battens run on 230V and chain together — one mains connection supplies a run of fittings. These are the correct solution for garages, workshops, commercial store rooms, under-counter lighting in retail, and utility installations where task-level output is required and a direct mains connection is practical.
- Knightsbridge 4W LED Linkable Strip, Cool White — £10.99 — 330mm length, the short option for under-cabinet chaining in kitchens or retail display shelving.
- Knightsbridge 7W LED Linkable Strip, Cool White — £15.99 — mid-length for workshop shelving and utility runs.
- Knightsbridge 13W LED Linkable Strip, CCT Selectable — £23.50 — CCT (colour temperature) switchable between warm white, neutral white, and cool white. Set the colour temperature to match the space. The versatile commercial option.
- Knightsbridge 18W LED Linkable Strip, Warm White — £22.50
- Knightsbridge 230V 22W LED Linkable Strip 3000K (1438mm) — £22.99 — full-length batten for garage and workshop primary lighting.
- Knightsbridge 230V 18W LED Linkable Strip 4000K (1138mm) — £36.00
- Knightsbridge 7W LED Linkable Strip with Motion Sensor — £25.99 — PIR sensor integrated. For cupboards, storerooms, utility areas — lights on when you enter, off after a set period. No additional PIR fitting required.
